MANAGING YOUR TREATMENT WITH KEYTRUDA
There are some key things you should know about KEYTRUDA that may help you understand and manage your treatment.
MANAGING YOUR TREATMENT
DAY-TO-DAY WITH KEYTRUDA
Administration
KEYTRUDA is delivered as a liquid directly into a vein, usually in your hand or arm. This will happen in a hospital or clinic, with an oncologist, haematologist or nurse looking after you. The actual infusion takes about 30 minutes, but you are likely to be required to stay in the hospital or clinic for longer than this. Your oncology team will be able to advise how long you should set aside on the day you receive your infusion.
KEYTRUDA is usually administered every 3 weeks or every 6 weeks, depending on the dose you are given.
Monitoring
You will have regular tests while you are receiving treatment with KEYTRUDA to see what effects it is having on your cancer and your general health.
Effects on your day-to-day life
KEYTRUDA affects different people in different ways. You won’t know what sort of impact it will have on your day-to-day life until treatment has started.
- Like all medicines, KEYTRUDA can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
- When you get KEYTRUDA, you can have some serious side effects. These side effects can sometimes become life-threatening and can lead to death.
- It’s important to let your healthcare team know if you have any side effects that bother you or that do not go away.
- KEYTRUDA may affect your ability to work. On treatment days – and maybe for a day or so after – you may not be able to attend work, or may need to rest at regular periods.
Your responsibilities
You are as much a part of your treatment team as your oncologist or dietitian. Keeping your team informed of how you feel is very important.
- Tell your doctor as soon as you experience any side effects. Your doctor will be able to advise you on the best way to manage any side effects. This may mean your symptoms resolve or do not become more serious, which can compromise your treatment.
- Keep your appointments. If you can’t make an appointment, reschedule it as soon as possible.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Eat well, exercise appropriately, and look after your emotional health. If you don’t know what’s best for your health, ask a member of your care team for advice.
- Tell anyone professionally involved in your healthcare that you are taking KEYTRUDA. This includes all doctors, nurses, pharmacists and dentists.
- Consult your doctor before taking any non-prescription medicines, herbal preparations or other alternative substances. These may interfere with your KEYTRUDA treatment.
